August 27, 2024: Day one of AWE Asia wrapped up successfully, bringing together Asia’s top XR experts, companies, media, and enthusiasts. This year, we were thrilled to welcome 1000+ attendees from 34 countries and regions.

Day One Conference Takeaways:

Our first day kicked off with an opening plenary by Ori Inbar, David Weeks, and Ryan Hu from the AWE team. Followed by the first keynote, Meta’s Head of APAC B2B Partnerships, Mark Jeffery, who began by sharing his insights on ‘The Future of Mixed Reality and Workplace Connection’. He discussed how mixed and augmented reality technologies are already helping employees connect, learn, and innovate, and how Meta continues to invest in transforming the enterprise sector.

The second keynote of the day, “Spatial Computing Needs a New Map,” involved Brian McClendon, Senior VP at Niantic, who discussed how the company is pioneering a 3rd generation map designed for immersive mixed reality experiences. His talk explored breakthroughs in computer vision, 3D scanning, and content creation, which are poised to redefine how digital maps function on mobile devices and mixed-reality headsets. Importantly, Niantic released a new version of its Scaniverse app, Scaniverse 4, which allows users to capture places and objects in 3D through a Gaussian splatting technique, and captures more data points about an object for accurate and rich representation with faster rendering.

We had quite a few insightful panels come together to share their XR expertise today. The first includes ‘Dream It, Build It with Snap AR and Gen AI’, featuring Srivatsan Jayasankar, Head of AR Partnerships at Snap India, as well as Valeriia Yanchuk, and Vlad Vasylkevych from the Snap AR team. Another session brought together engineering leaders from Meta, Dhwaj Agrawal and Yoav Goldstein, who shared on the topic of ‘Best Practices for Developing Immersive Meta Quest MR Experiences’.

We also had exciting news from NTT DOCOMO and NTT Communications, who jointly unveiled their successful test of a groundbreaking multi-platform cloud-rendering technology. This new innovation allows tablets and smartphones to seamlessly access real-time 3D video in various environments, powered by edge-computing solutions like DOCOMO MEC and on-premises edge servers provided by NTT Com.

As we wrap up day one, we’d like to extend a huge thank you to all of our sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and attendees for today’s success. We are so excited for day TWO of #AWEAsia2024!
